Obtaining a prior authorization for TMS therapy is much different than other procedures or services that require a prior authorization. We receive a number of calls every week from TMS clinics who are struggling with denials. The most common thing we here is, "We don't understand, our patients meet the insurance guidelines but the prior authorization is still being denied".


Insurance guidelines state the 'minimum' requirements to be met; however, we call this the 'trunk' criteria. Kim Mercille successfully started her own TMS therapy clinics where she and her son, Grant, provided services to over twenty patients a day in her first TMS clinic. She has been an RN for nearly 30 years, and has great passion for helping others. Kim has assisted many physicians with medical practice and infusion center start-ups, has started a cardiac monitoring lab, hospice companies, and other businesses.  She now focuses solely on helping others across the U.S. to start their own TMS clinic after seeing first-hand how TMS helped her patients to live a much better quality of life.

Jane Skinner began her career in mental health with Easter Seals, where she served in a Director position for over 10 years.  Jane developed and implemented award-winning National Project Search Transition Training Programs for the state of Missouri, where she launched four state programs with Centene Corp., VA (Veteran’s Administration), the City of St. Louis, and Embassy Suites. She joined Metro NeuroHealth as the Vice President of operations and plays a key role in all aspects of the business, with a special interest in TMS Billing Services and Client Care Services.

  • Three 1.5-Hour In-Depth Training Sessions
  • Three 1.5-Hour In-Depth Training Sessions + Two Months of Unlimited Support

Don't be fooled by billing companies that tell you they can bill for TMS services - due diligence is critical

Billing for TMS therapy is not the same as billing a standard patient visit by a physician or therapist. Nor can TMS therapy just be billed and payments assumed to be made. The revenue cycle starts with the benefits and eligibility check. 


TMS therapy requires a prior authorization (most of the time). Complicating the TMS payment process is the fact that TMS is a daily treatment for a number of weeks. There are many parts to the A/R cycle as well as many things that can go wrong on both the billing company or insurance side. Having extensive knowledge of this process is only gained by experience. 


Most billing providers do not have this type of experience. They saw an opportunity with TMS clinics and just started marketing for this service without realizing there is an art and science to TMS billing. The most challenging parts to the process is not the billing, but obtaining correct benefits and eligibility, the prior authorizationm and the 'collections'. Billing the service is something that can be learned fairly easily, but the other parts to the puzzle requires extensive knowledge, astute follow-up, and tenacity.


MNH earned this experience years ago through in-house billing after making the mistake of hiring multiple billing companies only to realize they did not have the level of knowledge required to effectively bill and collect for services rendered.
